HISTORY & MORE
The Retreat Center is owned by the Mt. Bethel Baptist Association of DC, MD and VA (MTBBA). In its early days, dating back to 1898, the 75-acre parcel was a haven for African American church members who gathered on the banks of the Potomac River for picnics, baptisms, and carnivals. They were welcomed at very few other places.
January 26, 1898, Trustees of the Mt. Bethel Association purchased this tract of land lying on the Potomac River in King George County, Virginia, known as a part of Mathias Point. It cost six hundred dollars ($600.00) and included bathing quarters, recreational and boating grounds, timber and a facility structure for overnight sleeping quarters.
As times changed, so did MTBBA - now comprised of more than 20 churches in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia. The facilities on the picturesque banks of the Potomac River are currently rented out for assorted social gatherings (retreats, meetings, weddings, church gatherings and family reunions, etc).
The Retreat Center's “Pavilion” is perfect for indoor receptions, reunions, workshops, conferences, etc., with wonderful water view. For such affairs, your caterer of choice will feel right at home in the commercial kitchen. “The Mansion” building features overnight lodging space and a multi-purpose area for dining and relaxation. Guests enjoy the picturesque scenery from The Mansion's screened porches and the deck overlooking the Potomac River. The Retreat Center is also an ideal spot for quiet respite.
While priority is given to MTBBA members, everyone is welcome! Activities typically hosted are retreats, workshops, learning institutes, family and/or class reunions, milestone celebrations, weddings/receptions, picnics, and other similar gatherings. Guests engage in recreational activities such as boating, fishing, walking, jogging, volleyball, basketball, and softball.
